Today we are looking at the attack by the first beast:  A Political Ruler, Revelation 13:1-10.

First, remember what has just happened in chapter 12.   Revelation has just given us a glimpse into the spiritual world.  We have seen several important things:

*The origin of the beast or Antichrist (Revelation 13:1). He arises up “out of the sea.”  This is seen in Revelation 17:15 where the waters are said to be “peoples and multitudes and nations and tongues.”  So, the Antichrist arises from the among people.

NOTE:  We need to be aware of what is happening on earth which will make things easier for Satan to operate.  Remember, the people and nations will be clamoring for a leader who can offer them hope and help.  The Antichrist will see their restlessness and political turbulence and give the people the hope they crave.  We see how easy it will be for him to take over, considering the mess the world is in.

NOTE Things Happening on Earth:

  1. the increase in world violence, conflict, terrorist activities, wars and rumors of wars (Matthew 24).
  2. the increase in natural catastrophes such as famines, earth quakes, and diseases all make it easier for the Antichrist to carry out his evil actions on the nations.  (Revelation 6:3-8; 6:12-17; 8:6-12; 8:13-9:11; 9:12-21).
Everything said about the Antichrist is symbolic of the enormous political power that he will gain.  He also will have enormous ability, and a most unusual genius.  We saw the seven heads and ten horns which refer to the ten nations he will rule over.  You might want to refer back, to our previous message to study in this area from our web site.

(1) Remember, the Antichrist will be the one who stands in the holy place of the temple in Jerusalem.

(3) He stands in the holy place and He blasphemes the name of God.

(4) He demands that people give their first loyalty to the state. (see Matthew 24:15).

(5) He will be the MAN OF SIN who opposes all religions, all that is called God and all that is worshiped.

“Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God” (2 Thessalonians 2:4).

  • Antichrist will speak great and boastful and terrible words against the most high (God).

“And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time” (Daniel 7:25).

  • He will demand that all people worship him and his state.

“And they worshipped the dragon [Satan] which gave power unto the beast [antichrist]: and they worshipped the beast, saying, ‘who is like unto the beast? Who Is able to make war with him?’ ” (Revelation 13:4).

  • The Antichrist will combine and embody THREE of the world’s most powerful empires, that is, empires that had conquered and controlled most of the known world of their day.  This is what is meant by his being like three animals: the leopard, the bear and the lion.  The picture being painted is that he will embody all the desire and lust for power, and all the characteristics and traits of these three empires.

Try to imagine that he has all the lust for power that existed within three of the greatest empires to rule the known world and combine that lust for power in one leader and government.

The intensity of so much lust for power will be such a driving force that it will wreak havoc and horror all over the world.  No nation will be spared from the fright and terror of such a drive and lust for power.

We might ask, “Who are the three empires that will be wrapped up in the beast?  Note that the Antichrist is said…

  • to look like a leopard.
  • to have feet like a bear.
  • to have a mouth like a lion.

So, what world empires do these animals represent?  And what traits that will characterized in the Antichrist?  So, let’s think about the Antichrist and Daniel and his visions of the end time – Rome, Revived Roman Empire: the Antichrist will possess the characteristics and traits of the three world empires and he shall arise from a fourth and possess those characteristics as well.

What four empires will be wrapped up in the Antichrist?  The visions of Daniel will tell us.  The visions in Daniel match John’s vision in Revelation.  They are both talking about the end time and the power the Antichrist and his government will have.

Daniel definitely says that the first government empire is the empire of Babylon.  It is only natural, therefore, to understand the following empires as the next four world-wide governments to appear in history.

There are the visions or dreams in Daniel that match the vision of John in Revelation

There Was Nebuchadnezzar’s dream of the Great Image (Daniel 2:31-33).

Note the four metals of the Great Image:

  • gold
  • silver
  • bronze
  • iron

There was Daniel’s Dream of the four beasts (Daniel 7:1-3).

Note the four great beasts:

  • lion
  • bear
  • leopard
  • a beast – dreadful, terrible, and strong

There was John’s Vision of the Combined World Empire of the Antichrist (Revelation 13:1-2).

Note the four great beasts:

  • leopard
  • bear
  • lion
  • the beast of the Antichrist who combines all the others

The Interpretation of the Image the head of GOLD is the first world empire: Babylon under Nebuchadnezzar (Daniel 2:36-38).

The SILVER is the second world empire: Medo-Persia (Daniel 8:20).  “And after thee shall arise another kingdom inferior to thee” (Daniels 2:39).

The BRONZE is the third world empire:  Greece (Daniel 8:21).  “Another third kingdom of BRASS, which shall bear rule over all the earth” (Daniel 2:39).

The IRON is the fourth world empire: Rome.
“And the fourth kingdom shall be strong as iron: forasmuch as iron breaketh in pieces and subdueth all things [all the other kingdoms]: and as iron that breaketh all these, shall it break in pieces and bruise [all the other kingdoms]” (Daniel 2:40).

The LION is the first world empireBabylon (Daniel 2:36-38).  The first was like a lion and had eagle’s wings: I beheld till the wings thereof were plucked, and it was lifted upon from the earth, and made stand upon the feet as a man, and a man’s heart was given to it” (Daniel 7:4).

The BEAR is the second world empire: Medo-Persia.  “And behold another beast, a SECOND, like to a bear, and it raised up itself on one side, and it had three ribs in the mouth of it between the teeth of it: and they said thus unto it, ‘Arise, devour much flesh’ ” (Daniel 7:5; Daniel 8:20).

The LEOPARD is the third world empire:  GREECE (Daniel 8:21-22; 10:20; 11:2-4).  “After this I beheld, and lo another, like A LEOPARD, which had upon the back of it four wings of a fowl; the beast had also four heads; and dominion was given to it”  (Daniel 7:6).

The dreadful, terrible, and strong BEAST is the fourth world empire: Rome (Daniel 7:23-24; 9:26).  “And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a BEAST RISE UP out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the same of blasphemy” (Revelation 13:1).

The interpretation of the Ten Toes of the image

The ten toes are part iron and part clay.  They cannot mix; the Roman empire falls apart.  But it is part iron, so certain parts of it can survive and revive.

“And whereas thou sawest the feet and toes, part of potters’ clay, and part of iron, the kingdom shall be divided; but there shall be in it of the strength of the iron, forasmuch as thou sawest the iron mixed with miry clay.  And as the toes of the feet were part of iron, and part of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong, and partly broken.  And whereas thou sawest iron mixed with miry clay, they shall mingle themselves with the seed of men:  but they shall not cleave one to another, even as iron is not mixed with clay” (Daniel 2:41-43).

The idea is that certain elements and traits of the Roman empire will survive.  Then, later in history the traits will revive with the seed of man. But these elements and traits will not mix to bring the perfect world or government.

The Interpretation of the TEN HORNS of the Dreadful, Terrible. And Strong Beast.

Then ten horns give rise to a little horn that reaches out and conquers and rules three of the ten horns.  The little horn is a man who rises to power by conquering these three nations.

“I considered the horns, and, behold, there came up among them another little horn, before whom there were three of the first horns plucked up by the roots:  and, behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of man, and a mouth speaking great things”(Daniel 7:8).

The idea is that a leader will arise from a “little horn”, a small nation, and conquer three nations.  Then the other seven nations will willingly submit to him and join him in his blasphemy of God and mankind.

The interpretation of the Dreadful, Terrible and Strong Beast of Revelation

The Antichrist will have seven heads and ten horns and ten crowns, and the seven heads that will be full of blasphemy.

“And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy” (Revelation 13:1).

The idea is that the Antichrist will be the head of seven heads or governments, that he will have ten horns, that is the power of ten governments.  He will have conquered three governments himself (Daniel 7:8).  All seven heads of state and the ten governments under him will blaspheme the name of God.

In our next study we will look at the traits of the metals, of the image, and of the four beasts that match the combined traits of the Antichrist.

Remember, we are looking at the future through the eyes of John.  We are seeing terrible things continuing to happen on earth.  However, you have a choice now as to where you will spend eternity, either with God in heaven or Satan in hell.  It is a really an easy choice because God loves you and wants you to spend eternity in heaven with Him.  However, you must remember that it is your choice.  God has done all that is necessary for that to happen.

God has given to you much information about the future.  The Bible recounts the rise and fall of mighty kingdoms and vast empires, primarily through the lens of their relationship to biblical Israel and Judah.  The story follows Israel’s oppression, rise to prominence, destruction and triumph.  Ultimately, Bible prophecy tracks the progression of world empires even to modern time and beyond – to the Kingdom of God at the second coming of Jesus Christ, God’s Son.

The Lord Jesus Christ is coming back again to receive the saved to Himself.  The question that every person faces is critical:  “Are You Ready to face Jesus Christ as your personal Savior?”

“Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.  In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you.  I go to prepare a place for you.  And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will COME AGAIN, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, THERE YOU MAY BE ALSO” (John 14:1-3).

He is coming back for His people.  Jesus is God’s Son and He cannot lie.  Are you ready?  It may be today!

Look at John 3:16 and Romans 10:9-13 and make your decision to trust the Lord Jesus Christ as your personal Savior.  It really is your choice whether to go to heaven or not.  Eternity lasts forever.  This life is only a short time.  Review also Matthew 7:13-14 and honestly determine which gate you have gone through.   It is not too late to change the path you are walking.
