THE BOTTOMLESS PIT, SATAN – ANGELS
As we start this section, we look back to Judgment (Revelation 8:13) and the Trumpet blast of the fifth judgment which was far more severe than other judgments. The previous four trumpet judgments were directed against the earth itself and involved natural catastrophes. Now the judgments will be directed against the ungodly and evil persons of this earth. God’s judgment WILL NOT fall on those who refuse to give their allegiance to the Antichrist, who refuse the mark of the beast (Revelation 9:4).
Remember: God will seal His followers; He will protect believers so that His judgments do not fall upon them. His judgments will be for the ungodly and evil persons, not those who have trusted His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. (“For God so loved the world, that He gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3:16).
Of course, as in every generation, believers will be martyred at the hands of ungodly men. But believers will not suffer the judgments of God. They will be protected even as Israel was protected during the Egyptian plagues under Moses.
As we begin, note that in Revelation 8:13 there is an angel flying through the midst of heaven, saying with a loud voice, woe, woe, woe to the inhabitants of the earth. The three other angels which have not yet sounded will do so soon.
Now we come to the blast of the fifth trumpet judgment (Revelation 9:1) and as we stated earlier, it will be far more severe than the other judgments. The other four trumpet judgments were directed against the earth itself and involved natural catastrophes. Now judgments will be directed against the ungodly and evil persons of the earth. These judgments will not affect those who refuse to give their allegiance to the antichrist (those who refuse the mark of beast, Revelation 9:4).
Let’s review the FACTS of the fifth judgment.
- The blast of the fifth judgment is now to be far more severe (8:13).
- The unnamed star or person appears (Revelation 9:1).
- The bottomless pit or abyss is opened (v. 2).
- The locusts from the abyss are sent to inflect unbearable punishments (v. 3-6).
- The locusts have a horrifying appearance and power (v. 7- 10).
REMEMBER: God will seal His followers; He will protect believers so that His judgments do not fall upon His people. His judgments, as we have seen, will fall only on those who have rejected His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. (John 3:16).
Of course, as we have also seen that in every generation, including our current time, believers will be martyred at the hands of ungodly men. We have also seen that believers of every generation will not suffer God’s judgment, which He bestows on the unsaved, those who have rebelled against Him and rejected His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. Why do people reject the Lord Jesus Christ and rebel against His free gift of eternal life (Romans 10:9-13)? It’s simple, they are sinners (Romans 3:23 and they will not change until they recognize who Jesus Christ really is, God’s Son).
We have previously looked at the angel flying high in the heavens proclaiming the woes, warning of the coming judgment. Remember, that the eagle is a symbol of vengeance (Deuteronomy 28:49; Hosea 8:1; Habakkuk 1:8).
Fact: None of the ungodly and evil of the world will escape the judgment of God. Why? Because God is perfect in His justice, righteousness, and love. God Himself will execute justice and righteousness in the trumpet judgments. This is the fifth judgment blasting its judgment upon the ungodly of the earth.
Note: This is the beginning of the great tribulation that is coming upon the earth. This is what the Book of God, the book of Destiny, reveals. But remember, as we have already seen, anyone who truly wants to be saved can be.
Now let’s move to Revelation 9:1.
SATAN – FALLEN ANGELS, ABYSS – BOTTOMLESS PIT
An unnamed star is said to fall from heaven. What is this star? Note the pronoun HIM is used to refer to this star.
IT IS A PERSON; the word STAR is used in its symbolic way to refer to the person of fame or of high position. Note the facts:
- He is said to be a star “fallen” (peptokota) from heaven to earth. This is past tense; it means that he was already fallen when God gave him the key to the bottomless pit.
- Christ said that He saw Satan fall from heaven.
” And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven” (Luke 10:18).
- Scripture gives a glimpse into the fall of Satan. He was apparently the highest archangel created by God. But he did what every unsaved person has done, and began to look at himself and to choose to go his own way. Therefore, God had to deal with him and every one of us when we reject and rebel against Him. God had to cast Satan out of heaven, out of His holy presence. Why? It is called the sin of pride.
“How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascent into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: I will ascend above the heights of the clouds: I will be like the most High. Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit” (Isaiah 14:12-15).
NOTE: Satan is given the keys to the bottomless pit, that is, the abyss, the place where Scripture says the demons and devils are kept.
THE POINT IS THIS: In comparing Scripture with Scripture, this fallen star or angel seems to be Satan himself. If he is not Satan, then he is probably some high ranking fallen angel in the spirit world. Presently Jesus Christ has the keys to the bottomless pit, but He gives them to Satan and allows Satan to afflict the earth with his hordes of demons. Why? So that the world of evil men can reap what they have sown. However, note that God restrains and limits His judgment on the evil men even as He does in our day and time (Matthew 8:29; Luke 8:31; Revelation 1:18,38; Revelation 20:11-15).
(Revelation 9:2) Abyss – Bottomless Pit: Fact – There is the bottomless pit. It will be opened by the fallen angel of Satan. What is the bottomless pit? It is the place where evil spirits and demons are kept until the end of the world. To help answer our questions and concerns we will now do a study of “Hell.”
HELL – I Peter 3:19-20 the prisons or compartments of hell. “By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison; Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is eight souls were saved by water.” This passage clearly says that Jesus Christ “went and preached unto the spirits in prison.” It says in particular that He preached to the souls of those who had lived in the days of Noah but had rejected God’s salvation and long suffering. What does that mean?
In order to determine the meaning, we must note some points.
This is where the spirits of unbelievers go when they leave this world. Scripture says that the place where unbelievers go is a prison (I Peter 3:19), and the picture in the Greek is actually that of a prison. Just as men put rebellious people into prison, so God shall imprison those who rebel against Him.
Scripture even pictures God having Satan bound with a chain and cast into the prison of the bottomless pit. It also pictures God having the angels who rebelled with Satan bound with chains of darkness and cast into the prison of hell. The point is that hell, the place where unbelievers go after leaving this world, is pictured as a prison. Scripture uses four terms to describe the prison. Note how each word or term describes a different section or cell block or compartment to the prison of hell.
NOTE: There is no cellblock in Hell for Believers. Why? Because of 2 Corinthians 5:28 – absent from the body is present with the LORD!
A. There is a cellblock or compartment which is called Hell or what the Greeks called Hades and Hebrews called Sheol.
This is where unbelievers go when they die and enter into the next world. Hell is the torment section for the human race, the place where all unbelievers are placed and punished unto the end of the world. At the end of the world, they are taken out of hell and cast into the lake of fire (Luke 16:19-31).
“And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell” (Matthew 10:28).
“Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?” (Matthew 23:33).
B. There is the cell block or compartment of TARTARUS. This is the place where fallen angels are kept unto the end of the world. At the end of the world they too shall be cast into the lake of fire. Note the description of Tartarus.
- It is a place of imprisonment where fallen angels are chained (2 Peter 2:4; Jude 6).
- It is a place of darkness (2 Peter 2:4; Jude 6).
- It is a place of vengeance (Jude 7).
- It is a place of eternal fire (Jude).
Note: Some commentators interpret the sons of God of Genesis 6:1-4 as angels and say that they are the only angels imprisoned in Tartarus. In this view Tartarus is thought to be the worst of all HELLS because the sin of Genesis 6:1-4 is thought to be the worst imaginable sin. In this view some of the other angels are said to be imprisoned in the bottomless pit and still others are thought to be roaming throughout the universe working for Satan and oppressing men.
“For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment” (2 Peter 2:4).
“And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day. Even a Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire” (Jude 6-7).
C. There is the cellblock or compartment called the Abyss or the Bottomless Pit. This is the place where demons and evil spirits are kept unto the end of the world. As pointed out previously, some commentators think that some angels are also imprisoned in the Abyss.
“And they (evil spirits) besought him that he would not command them to go out into the deep” (Luke 8:31).
“And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit. And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason the smoke of the pit. And there came out of the smoke locusts [demons] upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power… And they had a king over them, which is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is ABADDON, but in the Greek tongue hath his name APOLLYON” (Revelation 9:1-3, 11).
“And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast [Antichrist] that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them” (Revelation 11:7).
“The beast [antichrist] that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is” (Revelation 17:8).
“And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand.
And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years” (Revelation 20:1-2).
OLD TESTAMENT TEACHING ON HELL
It will probably help to review some additional things about hell. The doctrine of hell, like the doctrine of the Trinity, was revealed progressively: more implied (implicit) in the Old Testament and more developed (explicit in the New Testament.)
Genesis 3:15, from the very beginning, hell is implied in the curse on the serpent [Satan] “I (God) will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.”
As we learn later, the devil’s final defeat will come when he is cast into the Lake of Fire.
“And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall torment day and night for ever and ever” (Revelation 20:10).
“And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen” (Romans 16:20).
Psalm 9:17 “The wicked shall be turned into hell (return to the grave) [Hebrew: sheol], all the nations that forget God” (NKJV).
This word for HELL and its translation as Hades in the Septuagint often mean “the grave” but some passages seem to go beyond this, suggesting something deeper into the “unseen world.” Deuteronomy 32:22, for instance, speaks of the “lowest hell” (NKJV). At any rate, since death is the soul’s point of departure from the body, there is more involved in hell than the body’s burial in a grave—death is also the soul’s entrance into the spiritual realm.
“For You will not leave my soul in Sheol, nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption. You will show me the path of life; in Your presence is fullness of joy; at Your right hand are pleasures forevermore;” (Psalm 16:10-11).
“And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, some to shame and everlasting contempt” (Daniel 12:2).
” ‘For as the new heavens and the new earth which I will make shall remain before Me,’ says the Lord, ‘so shall your descendants and your name remain. And it shall come to pass that from one New Moon to another, and from one Sabbath to another, all flesh shall come to worship before Me,’ says the Lord. ‘And they shall go forth and look upon the corpses of the men who have transgressed against Me. For their worm does not die, and their fire is not quenched. They shall be an abhorrence to all fresh’ ” (Isaiah 66:22-24).
