I JOHN 2:28-29 – Part One

These seven tests of our salvation are important!  Why?  Because Jesus is Coming.  God wants to make  sure that you are going to be with Him in heaven.  Why?  Because He loves you, He shows you how you can be certain that you are going to heaven.

“The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, NOT WILLING that any should perish but that ALL should come to repentance.”  (2 Peter 3:9, emphasis added, NKJV)

Since Jesus went back to heaven, many have looked for and talked about the second coming of Jesus Christ, but He still hasn’t come.  Why?  Pretty simple, there are yet some to be added to His invisible church, the company of believers, the bride of Christ.  He is telling the believers to be patient and STAY alert.  The point of  Scripture is that He’ll come back just as He said He would.  That glorious day could be any day now and God wants you to be ready.

So we continue today to prepare for that wonderful day by comparing our life, to what God says it should be.  God wants to bless His people when He returns and so He helps us with these seven proofs that we are saved.  Most people want to understand how they can know that they are saved.  These seven proofs that we have been studying offer that understanding.

Today we ask, how do we know that we are saved?  God says:  Do We Abide In Christ?

It might help to go back and review I John 2:3-6.  Remember:  Jesus Christ is the ONLY Person who ever came OUT OF [ek] heaven.  He came out of the spiritual world and dimension and into the physical world we exist in.  He did this in order for us to know and understand God the Father and be able to receive His free gift of salvation.  (John 3:16; Ephesians 2:8-9)  Jesus came:

  • To show that He is the Son of God.
  • He came to reveal who God is.
  • He came to show us what life is all about.
  • He is of the very nature of God.
  • He came to teach us to live like God lives.
  • He came to teach us how to live righteous lives.
  • He came to teach that we should try to do all things right just like God.
  • He came to teach us that the person who abides and lives in Christ is the person who knows God [is saved].
  • He came to teach us that the person who does not abide in Christ does not know God or  is not saved.
  • So, God has given us seven proofs that we know God and are enroute to heaven.
  • He shows us these seven proofs so that we may have confidence and not be ashamed at Christ’s return. (v. 28)
  • He gives us proof seven, the proof of abiding:  that is living a righteous life.  (v. 29)

I JOHN  2:28 – ABIDING:  Here is test seven, do we Abide In Christ?

KEY:  Only you can answer that question.  God already knows whether that is true of you, but you must honestly examine these seven proofs and realistically answer God.

Important:  The word ABIDE means to dwell, continue, stay, sojourn, rest in or upon.  It means being set and fixed and remaining there; continuing on and on in a fixed state, condition, or being.  It is being at home and being permanent and settled.  Therefore, to abide in the Lord Jesus Christ means:

  • to continue and stay in Christ.
  • to sojourn and rest in and upon Christ.
  • to be set and fixed in Christ and to remain in Him.
  • to continue on and on in Christ, in being fixed in Him.
  • to be at home in Christ; to find our permanent home in Him and to be settled in Him.

KEY:  The basic idea of ABIDING IN CHRIST is that of dwelling.  God also showed us several other things about abiding:

  • It is like dwelling in a house.
  • We are to dwell in Christ, in the kind of life that He showed us while here on earth.
  • He showed us that living a life that was always right toward God and man.
  • He showed us that we are to make our home in Him [Christ].
  • He showed us that we are to dwell and move about in the righteous life of Christ.

“If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God.  Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.  For you died and your life is hidden with Christ in God.  When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.”  (Colossians 3:1-4, NKJV)

So with that in mind we need to examine how a person abides in Christ, in other words, how the true believer actually lives in a practical way.

I want to point out 16 principles that will show that you abide in Christ.

1.  Abiding in Christ means that a person confesses that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.  He believes the love that God has shown him in Christ and he loves God because of  what God has done for him.

“Whoever CONFESSES that Jesus is the Son of God, God ABIDES in him, and HE in God.  And we have known and BELIEVED the love that God has for us.  GOD IS LOVE, and he who ABIDES in LOVE ABIDES in God, and God in him.”  (I John 4:15-16, emphasis added, NKJV)

2.  Abiding means that a person walks and fellowships with Christ.  He LIVES and MOVES and has his being IN CHRIST.  He communes and lives in a CONSCIOUSNESS of the Lord’s presence, and from the Lord’s presence he learns of God, and he draws the strength and authority to live victoriously day by day.

“He who says he ABIDES in Him OUGHT HIMSELF also to WALK just as He walked.”  (I John 2:6, emphasis added, NKJV)

“Finally, my brethren, BE STRONG in the Lord and in the POWER of His might.”  (Ephesians 6:10, emphasis added, NKJV)

“But the ANOINTING [the Holy Spirit] which you have RECEIVED from Him ABIDES in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you; but  as the same ANOINTING [the Holy Spirit] teaches you concerning ALL things, and is TRUE, and is not a lie and just as it has TAUGHT you, you will ABIDE IN HIM.”  (I John 2:27, emphasis added, NKJV, cp. Psalm 16:11; Proverbs 3:5-6)

“In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.”  (Ephesians 1:13-14, NKJV)

3.  Abiding in Christ means that a person WALKS in OPEN confession before God.  He walks hour by hour all day long OPENING UP HIS LIFE TO GOD (see Romans 12:1-2; Ephesians 5:18); HE constantly CONFESSES that he is short of God’s glory and any known sin that he slips into.  He DOES NOT WALK in sin, and he does not allow any sin to go unconfessed.

“If we say that we have FELLOWSHIP WITH Him, and WALK [live] in darkness [sin], we LIE and do not PRACTICE the truth.  But if we WALK [live] in the light [by God’s Word] as He is the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the BLOOD of Jesus Christ His Son, cleanses us from ALL sin.  If we say that we have NO SIN, we DECEIVE OURSELVES, and the truth is NOT in us.  If we CONFESS our sins, He is faithful and just  to FORGIVE us OUR SINS and to CLEANSE us from ALL unrighteousness.  If we say that we have NOT SINNED, we make Him a LIAR, and His word is not in us.”  (I John 1:6-10, emphasis added, NKJV)

4.  Abiding in Christ means that a person CONTINUES in the Word of Christ and knows the truth.

“Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed in Him.  ‘IF you ABIDE in My word, YOU ARE My disciples indeed.  And you shall KNOW the truth, and the TRUTH shall make you free’.”  (John 8:31-32, emphasis added, NKJV)

5.  Abiding in Christ means that a person LETS the Word of God abide in HIS LIFE.  (Psalm 119:11)

“I have written to you, fathers, because you have known Him who is from the beginning.  I have written to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the wicked one [Satan].”  (I John 2:14, emphasis added, NKJV)

“Therefore let that ABIDE in you which you HEARD from the beginning.  IF what you heard from the beginning ABIDES in you, you also will ABIDE IN THE SON and in the Father.”  (I John 2:24, emphasis added, NKJV)

6.  Abiding in Christ means that a person experiences the indwelling presence and witness of the Spirit.

“No one has seen God at any time.  If we LOVE one another, God ABIDES in us, and His love has been perfected in us.  BY THIS  we KNOW that we ABIDE in Him, and He in us, BECAUSE He has given us of His  Spirit.”  (I John 4:12-13, emphasis added, NKJV)

 7.   Abiding in Christ means that a person has POWER to LIVE like he should.

“But you shall receive power when the Holy  Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of  the earth.”  (Acts 1:8, NKJV)

“If you ABIDE in Me, and My words ABIDE in you, you will ASK what you desire, and it SHALL be done for you.”  (John 15:7, emphasis added, NKJV)

8.  Abiding in Christ means that a person dwells in LOVE and in UNITY and FELLOWSHIP with all other believers.

“that they ALL may be ONE, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be ONE in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me.  And the glory which You gave Me I have given them, that they may be ONE  just as WE are one:  I in them, and you in Me; that they may be made perfect in ONE, and that the world may know that You have SENT Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me.”  (John 17:21-23, emphasis added, NKJV)

“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another.  By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”  (John 13:34-35, NKJV)

“If someone says, ‘I love God,’ and hates his brother, he is a LIAR; FOR he who does  not love his brother whom he has seen, HOW can he love God whom he has not seen?”  (I John 4:20, emphasis added, NKJV)

9.  Abiding in Christ  means that a person bears fruit and lives a very fruitful life.

“I am the vine, you are the branches.  He who abides in Me, and I in him, BEARS MUCH FRUIT; for without Me you can do nothing.”  (John 15:5, emphasis added, NKJV)

“But the FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.  Against such there is no law.”  (Galatians 5:22-23, emphasis added, NKJV)

10.  Abiding in Christ means that a person loves others that he lives and walks in love toward them.

“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another.  By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”  (John 13:34-35, NKJV)

11.  Abiding in Christ means that a person continues in the church; he has not gone out from the church, [unless unconfessed sin is in the church and cannot be corrected, then separation is demanded by God].

“They went out from us, but they were not of us [they were not truly saved]; for if they had been of us [saved], they would have continued with us; but they went out that they might be made manifest, that none of them were of us [saved].”  (I John 2:19, emphasis added, NKJV)

“Whoever abides in Him does not sin.  Whoever sins has neither seen Him nor known Him.”  (I John 3:6, emphasis added, NKJV)

12.  Abiding in Christ means that a person possess confidence, an unashamed life that prepares him for eternity.

“And now, little children, ABIDE [dwell] in Him, that when He appears, we may have CONFIDENCE and not be ashamed before Him at His coming.”  (I John 2:28, emphasis added, NKJV)

13.  Abiding in Christ means that a person actively surrenders himself to obey God’s commandments.

“Now he who KEEPS His COMMANDMENTS ABIDES IN HIM, and He in him.  And BY THIS we know that He ABIDES IN US, BY THE Spirit whom He has GIVEN US.”  (I John 3:24, emphasis added, NKJV)

14.  Abiding in Christ means that a person LOVES his brother.

“He who LOVES his brother abides in the light [is saved], and there is no CAUSE FOR STUMBLING in him.”  (I John 2:10, emphasis added, NKJV)

“We KNOW [know that you are saved], that we have PASSED from DEATH to LIFE, because we love the BRETHREN.  He who DOES NOT love his brother abides in death [is unsaved].  Whoever hates his brother is a MURDERER, and YOU KNOW that NO murderer has eternal life ABIDING in him.”  (I John 3:14-15, emphasis added, NKJV)

15.  Abiding in Christ means that a person does the will of God.

“And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who DOES THE WILL OF GOD ABIDES FOREVER [has eternal life].”  (I John 2:17, emphasis added, NKJV)

16.  Abiding in Christ means that a person experiences the continuous presence and anointing of the Holy Spirit.

“But the anointing which you have received from Him ABIDES in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing [the Holy Spirit] teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you will ABIDE in Him.”  (I John 2:27, emphasis added, NKJV)

“Now he who KEEPS His commandments ABIDES IN HIM, and He in him.  And by this we KNOW that He ABIDES in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.”  (I John 3:24, emphasis added, NKJV)
